Harrisonburg High School’s Kasey Thompson Named 2023 Virginia Journalist of the Year

Congratulations to Kasey Thompson, a senior at Harrisonburg High School, who was named the Virginia Student Journalist of the Year by the Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers and Advisers.

Thompson is an editor-in-chief at HHS Media, where she oversees production of her school yearbook, The Taj, while also working with school newspaper The Newsstreak, website hhsmedia.com and associated social media accounts. She is advised by Valerie Kibler.

After earning recognition in Virginia, Thompson’s portfolio will represent the state at the national student journalist of the year competition hosted by the Journalism Education Association.

In the Virginia competition, Reyna Berry earned second place. Berry is features editor for the Rank & File news magazine at George C. Marshall High School (Daniel Reinish, adviser).

Celeste Wetmore, a head editor at Yorktown High School’s Yorktown Sentry, earned third place in the state contest (Chrissy Wiedemann, adviser).
