The Journalism Education Association has recognized Virginia yearbook adviser Mary Kay Downes with the Linda S. Puntney Teacher Inspiration Award.

This award acknowledges the impact Downes has had inspiring others to pursue a career in teaching journalism and making a difference in the teaching community.

Described in a press release as a role model and pioneer, Downes was also commended for being “an outspoken voice for student press rights.”

Downes, who advises the Odyssey yearbook at Chantilly High School, will be formally recognized at the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention.
