Story Archive Project: Islamophobia
March 3, 2016
Teenagers everywhere are basically the same…they have the same dreams, the same stressors, the same conflicts. They are dealing with the same issues in their environment and we want to see how those stories compare around our state.
As we approach a particularly contentious election season, remarks made by our potential leaders have raised issues once again that really surfaced after 9-11. As our schools in Virginia become more and more diverse, Islamophobia continues to become real for our students.

Have our stories inspired you to cover areas of faith and religion?
If you feel you need more resources to take on this complex topic or to find the best approach for your school community, visit The Washington Post’s Newspaper In Education resource Media Coverage of Religion and Faith (https://nie.washingtonpost.com/node/440).
This guide presents media coverage in reprints of The Post’s editorial, commentary, KidsPost article and Toles’ editorial cartoons during the visit of Pope Francis. We then expand to explore media coverage of religion and faith. Students “Meet the Religion Reporter,” get tips for covering religion and faith in student media, and are challenged to create informational graphics using data from reliable sources. Activities focus on the issue of religious freedom around the globe. Sidebars link to additional resources.
Next month’s topic: The 2016 Election Cycle. Entries due 3/28. Please send your submissions to [email protected].
