The first thing customers notice about Horizon Gifts is their incredibly friendly employees. They greet customers when they walk into Horizon, and help them find anything they may need. “It’s definitely a little bit more friendly here than other places,” Gavin Sorrells, floor manager of Horizon, said.

Sorrells began working at Horizon when he was 18. He was introduced to Horizon by their weekly game nights, and later decided to start working there. “It seems like a spot ended up opening up for me, and I ended up taking it,” said Sorrells.

As a floor manager, Sorrells answers calls, helps customers, checks prices and helps keep the shop running. Some of the others who help to run Horizon, would be Richard, who helps with stones and crystals. Karen, who takes care of the finances and Ross, who is the store manager. Though most of the time, there are only two people at a time assigned to work at Horizon for morning and evening shifts. “Our hours are a little bit shorter than most stores. So we don’t necessarily need as many people. It’s usually two people assigned for the morning shift and the evening shift,” said Sorrells.

Employees at Horizon show a new meaning of hard work, but also inclusiveness. “The reason I stayed is definitely because the owners are friendly to me, and I ended up getting along with a lot of the employees,” said Sorrells. Although, to Sorrells, the best part of his job is the customers. “There are an amazing amount of different people who walk in through the doors,” Sorrells said.

At Horizon, you can tell they do their best to draw in many different kinds of people. They have different products ranging from crystals to Dungeons & Dragons dice. Though, some of their more popular products would include incense, board games and jewelry. They get their products from local places, overseas and even make some of their own products.

Although it didn’t always used to be so diverse, over time, Horizon grew in local businesses and customers. In fact, they actually expanded their store and from the new local businesses contributing, they grew in merchandise as well. “We ended up expanding our space, initially because of how the storage worked. We had to have a white wall that blocked almost the entire back [of the store],” said Sorrells. “We have also opened up to a lot more places, and a lot more local people selling new stuff in our shop.”
