As you wrap up the school year (and publish your final issues and distribute your yearbooks), you may want to get your editors to start pulling together work for critiques and award consideration. Many have early June deadlines, so get your POs submitted and checks cut now!

Here are a few organizations to consider submitting your work to:

NSPA

  • NSPA Critique & Pacemaker Consideration: You need to be a Level 2 Member ($189) to receive the critique. Critiques are generally emailed over the summer, in time for publications staffs to make changes when planning their 2019 books, papers, magazines, broadcasts or webpges. You can also submit a second copy of your publication for the Pacemaker contest. (Rates are different for broadcast and web – check out the link for more details).
  • NSPA Individual Awards: NSPA members can also enter work in the Individual Award categories for Story of the Year, Picture of the Year, Design of the Year, Broadcast Story of the Year, Multimedia Story Package of the Year, Social Justice Reporting and Cartoon of the Year. There is also a new “Portfolio of the Year” category. Most of the categories allow you to select two entries per publication. Entry is free for members and easy – it’s all online!

Entries must be uploaded by June 22.

CSPA

  • CSPA Critique & Crown Consideration: You need to be a “Regular” Member [Hybrid $299, Digital $259, Print $259] to receive the critique. Critiques are generally emailed over the summer, in time for publications staffs to make changes when planning their 2019 publications. Be sure to submit a second copy of your publication for the Crown contest.

Entries must be postmarked by June 11. (Fall delivery yearbooks by October 1.)

  • CSPA Gold Circle Awards: CSPA is working with OpenWater to use their award-management software to accept Gold Circle entries ELECTRONICALLY this year! They hope to have their electronic Gold Circle entry system ready for launch in early May. CSPA will no longer accept hard copy entries for its Gold Circle categoriesKeep an eye on CSPA’s website, email newsletter, and/or Twitter feed for updated category descriptions, submission rules and file size requirements.

VHSL

This is our “state championship” and publication staffs earning the ranking of Trophy Class earn their school Wells Fargo Cup Points – ask your Activities Office to pay for these contests (they’d pay for the basketball team’s state tournament entry, right?).

Entries must be RECEIVED by June 15. (Note: this is not a postmarked date; the entries must actually be received by the 15th.) The critique forms are available at vhsl.org. They can be a bit hard to find, so we’ve attached copies below.
